Does Pre-Ordering a Book Matter?

November 4, 2009 by Joanna Slan

Great question popped up on one of the lists. The person asked, "Does pre-ordering a book help the author? Is pre-ordering more important than buying a book within the first 3 weeks it comes out?"Here's my answer:As I understand it, pre-ordering helps a lot. The publisher looks to pre-orders to determine print run--and early indications of popularity. The higher the print run, the more a publisher has invested in a book, and therefore, the more a … [Read more...] about Does Pre-Ordering a Book Matter?

Dealing with Depression

November 3, 2009 by Joanna Slan

I thought I was handling my mom's death pretty well, until the other day. My sister sent me a photo of my mom's gravestone. I had asked her to, but somehow, seeing that stone with Mom's name and date of death, just...well...it sort of sent me over the edge.Of course, this came at a bad time. A lot of my professional life is up in the air. I'm living in a rental house, and it doesn't always work for me. My husband is working a lot of hours. None … [Read more...] about Dealing with Depression

He's just fine for a couple of hours, even three or four, then suddenly he HAS to have water RIGHT now. So I was stumbling around in the dark, more asleep than awake thanks to the 1/2 of an Ambien tablet I took, and trying to get his leash on so he won't get hit by a … [Read more...] about I'm Too Old for Mall Hours

Most Structural Problems Can Be Fixed…

October 26, 2009 by Joanna Slan

This is from an interview featured in Shelf Awareness. Go to info@shelf-awareness.com to learn more. It's about a new book called "Alice I Have Been." The subject matter is a bit tough to take for me at least--the overtones of a grown man's obsession with a child creep me out. This book centers on the relationship between Lewis Carroll and Alice Liddell, the girl who inspired him to write "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland." The book's author is … [Read more...] about Most Structural Problems Can Be Fixed…
